Margaret Walker (married name, Margaret Walker Alexander) was an American poet and novelist who rose to be one of the leading writers of the mid-20th century. Her notable works include the novel, Jubilee, and a poetry collection, For My People. She founded the Margaret Walker Center, an archive and museum dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, and dissemination of African American history and culture at Jackson State University. Margaret Walker’s life and work are commemorated with a historical marker on the Mississippi Writers Trail.
